Regathering for Worship

by Church Staff

Joyous news! Thanks to a decline in the state’s and our area’s COVID-19 positivity rate, Bishop Haynes has authorized us to regather for in-person worship. To support the health and safety of all, guidelines will be in place, as they were when we regathered over the summer. Masks must be worn, social distancing guidelines must be followed, and there will be no congregational singing.

Starting March 14, we will begin holding two services each Sunday, one at 8:00 a.m. and one at 10:00 a.m.

8:00 a.m. Service

  • Will be held in person.
  • You do not need to contact the church in advance if you plan to attend this service.

10:00 a.m. Service

  • Will be held in person and also livestreamed.
  • Due to capacity limits, the church needs to know in advance who plans to attend in person. Please call the church office by noon on Friday of each week in which you plan to attend the Sunday service.

Information about Holy Week Services will be forthcoming.

Manakin Alters Services and Activities

by Church Staff

On December 9, Bishop Haynes announced the Diocese is putting new guidelines in place due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. Effective immediately, all indoor church activities, including services are suspended. These guidelines will be in effect until the surge subsides and it is determined it is safe to once again hold indoor worship and activities.

What does that mean at Manakin?

Worship
Even though we must be apart, we will continue to worship together. Worship services will be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page and on YouTube (links are provided in Manakin’s weekly emails). The livestreamed services may also be accessed from our website’s homepage. You will be able to play the videos of these services at a later time if you are unable to join us at the time of the service.

Sunday Services
On Sundays, there will be one service at 10:00 a.m. Service bulletins are emailed each week and are also available on our website.

Christmas Eve Service
There will be one service on Christmas Eve at 4:00 p.m.

Wreaths Across America
Manakin will still hold Wreaths Across the America at 10:00 a.m. on December 19, as this is held outdoors.

Other Church Activities
The church’s weekly emails will include updates on other Manakin activities and will keep you posted on the various ways you can continue to connect with your church family.

Operation Christmas Child

by Church Staff

You are invited to join Manakin as we work together to bring hope and joy to children through Operation Christmas Child. Those interested in participating in the program are asked to fill a shoebox with gifts as explained at https://samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box/. Boxes may be picked up at the church. You may fill up the box and return it to the church, or we can make arrangements to pick it up at your door. You can even put together your gift box online. All filled boxes should be returned to Manakin by Sunday, November 15. Manakin will pay for shipping the boxes, as it did last year. If you’d like to learn more, including details about picking up or dropping off boxes, contact the Church Office.

Blessing of the Animals

by Church Staff

These unusual times prompted Manakin to reimagine its annual Blessings of the Animals. This year, we invite you to bring your pet or pets to our St. Francis drive through Pet Blessing on Sunday, October 4. From 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., drive through the circle at Denny Hall and receive a blessing and a treat for your beloved pets.

In-Person Services and Activities cancelled until further notice

by Church Staff

Manakin received word from the Diocese that all in-person services and activities are cancelled until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  In part, this is the Bishop’s message:

On March 12, we directed Episcopal communities in our Diocese to suspend all church activities including gatherings for public worship for a period of two weeks in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 disease caused by the now pandemic coronavirus. At that time that we promised that would re-evaluate by March 26. I think it is safe to say that even with March 26 still a few days away, we all realize that our time of social distancing will extend far beyond that date. The Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization have suggested a period of up to 8 weeks. Sadly, these 8 weeks encompass our most sacred times of Holy Week and Easter, a time when more people gather to receive the Eucharist than at any other time. How can we NOT gather, we wonder? And yet, our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has asked us to do just that and to encourage and engage online and in-home resources for worship.

In light of Bishop Curry’s advice, the advice of health professionals monitoring the pandemic and the directions of government officials, public gatherings for worship continue to be suspended in the Diocese of Southern Virginia until further notice – a time frame which regrettably includes the liturgies for Holy Week and Easter.
