Thank You for Supporting Outreach

by Church Staff

By Holly Walker

Laughter and music filled the air, as partygoers excitedly circled tables, jotting down their bids for artwork, gift baskets, jewelry, delicious meals, fun outings, and more. Enticed by the mouth-watering scents that wafted through the air, others moved to the buffet line, eager for the chance to taste a number of treats. Old friends greeted one another, new friends were made, and warm conversations enveloped the room, as some took the dance floor and swayed to the sounds of Joe LaLuna. By 8:00 p.m., people crowded around their tables, paddles in hand, eager for a chance at winning magnificent trips, tours through history, gourmet food, and more. This was scene as Manakin Episcopal Church’s 11th Annual Reach for the Stars Gala and Auction unfolded on September 29.

This annual event supports Manakin’s Outreach program, allowing it to support organizations such as Boys Home of Virginia, CARITAS, Families of the Wounded, Habitat for Humanity, Powhatan Free Clinic, Family Lifeline, and feeding programs, just to name a few.

Thanks to the generosity of this year’s donors, sponsors, and attendees, the 2018 Reach for the Stars Gala and Auction raised over $30,000, a record amount for this annual event! This brings the total raised over the last eleven years of the gala to more than $196,000!

Help Manakin give to others in the community by donating school supplies

by Church Staff

During the month of August, we are encouraging our families to give to others in our community by donating items to address two areas of need in our community. Flat Rock Elementary School in Powhatan County has given us a list of needed school supplies to collect that will support their students and teachers, and Comfort Case, an organization that helps children in crisis, has given us a list of needed supplies to help their children they serve. As you are out and about doing your own shopping, pick up and item or two, bring them to church, and place them in the containers in Denny Hall. The supply lists can be found outside the Sunday School classroom in Denny Hall. Please return by Sunday, August 26, 2018. Contact Julia Eliades for more information!

School Supply Donations for Powhatan School
Flat Rock Elementary School in Powhatan is excited by our offer to help their students and teachers this year by stocking their shelves with needed supplies. Supplies will be distributed at the beginning of the year and all through the year. Thanks to Katie, Matthew, Monroe, and Martha Grace Harrison for delivering our donations.

You are invited to an evening of festivities, as Manakin Episcopal Church hosts its 11th Annual Reach for the Stars Auction and Gala on Saturday, September 29. Reach for the Stars is an evening packed with fun, delicious food, warm fellowship, music, and spirited bidding, as a wide variety of items are auctioned to raise money for the church’s outreach programs.

The silent and live auctions will feature vacations, jewelry, art, dining opportunities, and much more. Proceeds from the event will support a variety of organizations in our area. Over the past 10 years, Reach for the Stars has helped Manakin raise more than $165,000 for organizations such as the Powhatan Free Clinic, Family Lifeline, Boys Home, Madeline’s House, CARITAS, Families of the Wounded, Habitat for Humanity, and local feeding programs.

Join us for this wonderful event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Salisbury Country Club. Tickets are $50 each and include event entry, food and three adult beverages. To purchase tickets, contact the church office at 804-794-4601.

Supporting the Gala

by Church Staff

Excitement is building, as we count down to Manakin’s annual gala and auction. Did you know there are ways you can help us prepare for this event?

  • Consider donating funds toward sponsoring our singer, registration staff, auctioneer and raffle prizes.
  • Donate a gift card to your favorite restaurant or a bottle of wine to our Wine Wheelbarrow.
  • Take part in the 100 Yard Dash! Buy a block (or blocks) on the board set up in Denny Hall. The more blocks you buy, the better your chances of winning a $200 VISA gift card!
  • Buy your Gala tickets, and help sell tickets to your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers!

Thank you to all who have made donations and who have volunteered their time to make this a great event!

Contact the church office (804-794-6401) for more information.

Supporting the Community and Each Other

by Church Staff

Each month, Manakin parishioners spread God’s love in so many ways. Through outreach and in-reach activities, parishioners care for each other and for those in our community who are most in need. Here is just a small sampling:

  • Feeding Programs: The church family participates in a number of feeding programs throughout the year, making hot meals; packing lunches; and serving and delivering food to those in need.
  • Collections: Throughout the year, Manakin collects donations to support local food banks, animal shelters and other community organizations.
  • Episcopal Relief & Development: Parishioners help battle poverty and disease in third world countries, by making donations that provide life-altering and life-saving supplies.
  • Helping Each Other: Members of the parish serve as Stephen Ministers, who are listening partners and shoulders to lean on for anyone facing a difficulty in his/her life. Those who participate in Manakin’s Pastoral Committee make meals, send cards, call, send texts, and offer transportation and more to parishioners in need.
  • Fundraising for Outreach: Each year, parishioners come together to plan and support the church’s Reach for the Stars Gala and Auction, which raises money for the church’s outreach program.
  • Supporting our Church: Whether it is preparing the altar, changing a light bulb, singing in the choir, teaching Manakin’s youth, or leading adult formation activities, parishioners lend their expertise and hearts to a variety of committees and church projects.

This is taste of the wonderful ministries and fellowship found at Manakin. If you are already involved in the life of the church, thank you for all you are doing! If you’ve been thinking about getting involved but are not quite certain about what’s the best fit for you and your interest, talk to Gini or one of our committee chairs or contact the church office!

Volunteers Pack 30,000+ Meals

by Church Staff

For the eighth year in a row, dozens of volunteers filled Denny Hall at Manakin Episcopal Church to take part in a Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) meal-packing event. For nearly three hours on January 14, 2018, the room buzzed with activity, as people of all ages assembled meal packets containing soy, dried vegetables, rice and vitamin packets. Some stood shoulder-to-shoulder at funnel stations, measuring ingredients and filling meal bags. Others lined long tables, carefully weighing each bag and then sealing it shut. Runners shuttled bins and buckets back and forth, carefully moving the bags from station to station until finally delivering them to a team that counted the meals, packed them into boxes, and loaded a waiting truck.

Working together, the group of more than 120 packed 30,024 meals, bringing the total number of meals packed at Manakin’s Rise Against Hunger events to 233,742!

In the coming weeks, Rise Against Hunger will let us know where these meals are being shipped and who they will help nourish.

We want to thank all the volunteers – Manakin parishioners, family, friends and community members – who came out to support our 2018 event, as well as our past Rise Against Hunger activities. To see photos from our most recent event, visit Manakin’s Facebook page

Mark your calendars. Manakin’s 2019 meal-packaging event will take place January 19. We hope to see you there! In the meantime, if you’d like to participate in other Rise Against Hunger activities, visit www.riseagainsthunger.org/locations/richmond-virginia.

Rise Against Hunger on January 13

by Church Staff

Join Manakin on Saturday, January 13 as we come together to pack meals for Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now). During this meal-packaging event – the eighth held at Manakin – we will pack more than 30,000 meals to help with international hunger relief! This is a multi-generational activity, during which people of all ages can participate. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. in Denny Hall and will last until around noon. Participants are asked to arrive early to check in and get ready. All are welcome to take part! Bring your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and anyone who you think will enjoy participating in this fun and worthwhile activity. Organizers are trying to get an idea of how many volunteers will be present, so please take a moment to register at the event web site at http://events.stophungernow.org/MEC18 or e-mail Paul Davis at prdadj30@yahoo.com.

In addition to live and silent auctions, which feature amazing trips, fun outings, mouth-watering food, beautiful jewelry, inspiring art, and a wide array of other must-have items, this year’s Gala includes the smooth vocals of Joe LaLuna, who will sing American music standards made famous by icons such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.

All proceeds will be used to support Manakin’s Outreach program, which helps organizations and people throughout the area.

There’s still time to join in the fun!
