Manakin’s Sunday School Prepares to Launch Clean Water Project

It’s that time of year – time to plan for Sunday School. Sunday School begins on September 13 at 9:45 a.m. We will kick off the year with a Rally Day. This is an all-inclusive event for children and youth, ages 3 years old – 12th graders (nursery available). Special guests will come to Manakin to help us kick off our outreach project with Stop Hunger Now – “The Year of Clean Water,” an adventure in ecology of our natural resources.

Our project, which will run from September – December 2015, will be to provide 10 clean water systems to be used in areas where water currently causes disease and death to children and adults. To reach our goal, we need to raise $100 for each system – $1,000 total. Information about this Sunday School project and how you can support it may be found in Denny Hall.

Choir Corner: Voices Needed

Do you like to sing in the shower or at Karaoke events? If you do, then please consider joining the Chancel Choir. Rehearsals will begin on September 9 and will run from 7:30–9:15 p.m. in the Choir Room. We welcome all voice parts, and you do not have to read music.

The Choristers (Ages 7-16 unchanged voices) Choir will begin rehearsals on September 27 after the 10:00 a.m. service. We will rehearse until noon. Please encourage your children and grandchildren to join us. They will learn about singing and liturgy. At this time, the Choristers plan to sing as part of the 4:00 p.m. Family Liturgy on Christmas Eve. If there is more participation and interest, the children may sing more often.

Vacation Bible Spectacular Focuses on Clean Water

During this year’s Vacation Bible Spectacular, we will be “Crushin’ It” for clean water by raising awareness and money to provide clean water systems for those in need.

Join us on Sunday, August 9 following the 10:00 a.m. service. All ages 4-years old through adults (Nursery available upon request) are welcome.

The day will feature singing, a variety of programs, prizes, games, outreach opportunities and special guests. We will enjoy a pasta bar, that includes an assortment of pastas, sauces, side dishes, bread and desserts.

The cost is $6 per person and $20 per family (maximum). All profits will go to the “Clean Water System” fund sponsored by Stop Hunger Now.

ALS Benefit is Huge Success

May 31 was the culmination of our “May is ALS Awareness Month.” After wearing our red wrist bands and praying for our Manakin members with ALS for the whole month of May, we had a Chili Cook-off to benefit our families. Thirteen chilies of every variety imaginable were tasted. Our taste buds were tickled with everything from “Bill’s Wild Chili” (with deer and bear meat) to “Confirmation Chili” (white chicken chili). Cornbread, tortilla chips, lemonade and lots of conversation and laughter accompanied our chili. $1830 was raised for our two families touched by ALS! The winning chili was made by our 2015 Confirmation Class! A huge “thank you” to everyone who worked so hard to make this event such a resounding success.

Manakin Chili Cook-off Winner

Manakin’s four youth confirmands and their mentors gathered on May 30 and skillfully and lovingly prepared chili for the Manakin Chili Cook-off on May 31. This is the prize-winning recipe. Enjoy!

Confirmation Chicken Chili
2-3 lbs. cooked and shredded chicken breast
4-6 cups chicken broth
1 large onion chopped
2-4 cloves of garlic, chopped fine
2 cans Northern Beans, not drained
2 (4ozs.) can diced green chiles
4 t. fresh lime juice
2 t. cumin
1 t. cayenne
16 oz. lite sour cream

Sauté onion in oil, in large pot. Add garlic. Stir in every-thing else (except sour cream) Simmer, stirring occasionally 30-45 minutes. Taste test. Add sour cream, off of heat.

Scholarships for Manakin’s Students

The Lawrence W. Mason Scholarship program provides scholarships to all college students from the Parish. The only qualification to be considered for a scholarship is that the student be pursuing education beyond high school.

As in the past, to be certain no one who is eligible gets overlooked, each summer we remove all the names from the scholarship list and ask anyone who is interested to reregister. This is the only way we can account for the changing circumstances of the students we are supporting. Please call Wendy by August 17 with the student’s name, the school attending and the projected completion date.

Thanks to the generosity of the members of Manakin, we are able to help our young people continue their education with scholarships and to let them know their church still remembers them while they are away.

Summer Doings

“Summer Doings,” our Sunday morning program for children, will begin on June 7. We still need volunteers to teach, inform and inspire our kids with whatever program, lesson, song-fest or other experience you’d like to share. “Summer Doings” is held during the first part of each Sunday’s service. If you’d like to be involved, sign up on the sheet in Denny Hall or contact the church office. For more information, speak to Rev. Michael Stone or Jo Blandford.

 

Vacation Bible Spectacular

Join us for the 2015 Vacation Bible Spectacular – an event for all ages (4 years through adults) Sunday, August 9 after the 10:00 a.m. service (nursery available). It will last until approximately 3:00 p.m.

The Vacation Bible Spectacular will include singing, prizes, games, study, outreach and more, as well as a fabulous lunch. The cost is $6 per person with a maximum of $20 per family.

Those interested in participating are asked to sign up by July 12. A sign-up sheet may be found in Denny Hall, or you may call the church office.

The Time to Register for Camp Chanco 2015 is Now

A session at Chanco is more than just a good time in the woods. Yes, there is laughter, singing, bonfires, silly skits and amazing outdoor activities, including swimming, boating, the ropes course and zip lining. But there is more. Through time spent in Christian community and lessons taught by our chaplains who are youth ministry leaders from our own diocese, your camper will have the opportunity to grow closer to God and develop his/her own faith in a unique way. There are many benefits to attending summer camp at Chanco, not the least of which are an emotionally safe environment to simply be yourself, an opportunity to be a kid spending the majority of your time outdoors and away from technological gadgets, and developing true friendships that often develop much faster as a result of living and working together in community.
